In March 2025, after meeting them at a BFI networking event in London, Harvey Ryan and Chloe Crocker brought me on to their lovely short film, Smiley Faces.

It is a short drama film with a mother-daughter relationship at its heart. The daughter, Gemma, is a second-hand food delivery worker and is struggling to find jobs elsewhere, while her mother tries to assist her in offering the job she once stepped away from, a care worker, which Gemma is reluctant to accepting. Only through taking care of people will their bond grow back again.

A very sweet story and quite different from my other 2025 projects I have worked on. For the opening scene, Harvey mentioned that his favourite sound was of an orchestra tuning before a concert. I therefore recreate this sound using the chamber-esque instrumentation, which he also suggested to use in order to replicate the intimacy of the film's themes.

It was also amazingly selected for the Margate Film Festival 2025 programme, allowing it to be shown on a big screen to an even bigger audience! Once it has officially been released, it will show here and on the Projects page.
